Our Story

It started with a pile of stinky nappies

Built by a mum who was sick of laundry that smelled like a science experiment

Let’s be honest — nobody starts a detergent company because they think it sounds glamorous. You start one because you’ve got two kids in cloth nappies, a washing machine running what feels like 47 hours a day, and every single “natural” detergent you try either doesn’t clean properly or leaves your nappies smelling like something died in them.

That was me. Hi, I’m Leanne — mum of two, founder of B Clean Co, and a woman who has seen things in a nappy pail that would make a grown man weep.

I’d been using cloth nappies for years — partly for the environment, partly because I’m stubborn — and I could not find a plant-based detergent that actually worked. The mainstream ones were full of chemicals I couldn’t pronounce. The eco ones smelled lovely but couldn’t handle a Tuesday afternoon blowout. And the ones that did work cost roughly the same as a small car.

So I did what any reasonable, sleep-deprived parent would do: I decided to make my own.

I teamed up with one of Australia’s best laundry chemists (yes, that’s a real job and yes, they’re as fascinating at dinner parties as you’d imagine) and we set out to create something that ticked every box: plant-based ingredients, powerful enough for cloth nappies, gentle on sensitive skin, no SLS, no synthetic fragrance, no optical brighteners, and — this was non-negotiable — it had to actually get the stink out.

The logic was simple. If it can clean cloth nappies — genuinely the filthiest laundry known to humanity — then it can clean anything. Your gym gear, your school uniforms, your partner’s mysterious “I swear I only wore it once” t-shirts. Everything.

Two years of testing, reformulating, and washing approximately 4,000 loads of laundry later, BABY was born. Then came SOFT (with built-in softener that doesn’t wreck absorbency — because apparently that’s hard to do) and SPORT (for the kind of gym gear that makes you question your life choices when you open the laundry basket). 

And we are still adding new products every few months BUT we do not compromise on anything. Yes our products are expensive, and even the chemist said you won’t sell any, BUT here we are. Much loved by parents over the world. So yes, its expensive but you literally are getting the best detergent your money can buy.

Made in Adelaide. Because where else?

B Clean Co is proudly made right here in Adelaide, South Australia. Not “designed in Australia, manufactured overseas” — actually made here, by real people, in a family-owned factory that employs over 70 local staff.

We searched across the country for the right manufacturing partner — someone who shared our obsession with quality, could handle small-batch production, and wouldn’t look at us funny when we turned up with a bucket of pre-soaked cloth nappies and said “can you make this smell better?”

 

Every pouch of B Clean Co detergent is made with ingredients sourced primarily from Australia, packed by hand, and shipped from our little warehouse in Norwood. When you buy from us, you’re keeping Australians in jobs and supporting a business that’s exactly what it looks like — a mum who got really, really passionate about laundry.

What we put in (and what we leave out)

We’re not going to give you the “we’re saving the planet one wash at a time” speech. We’re a laundry detergent, not a superhero. But we do believe you shouldn’t have to choose between clean laundry and clean ingredients.

Every B Clean Co product is:

  • Plant and mineral based — no petroleum-derived ingredients
  • Free from SLS, SLES, parabens, and phosphates
  • Free from synthetic fragrances and dyes — gently scented with Australian essential oils that rinse free
  • Free from optical brighteners — we clean your clothes, we don’t just make them look clean under UV light (yes, that’s what brighteners do, and yes, it’s as dodgy as it sounds)
  • Vegan and not tested on animals
  • Grey water and septic safe
  • Packed with 4 powerful enzymes — protease, amylase, lipase, and cellulase for a genuine deep clean

We also include an inbuilt laundry booster in every formula, which means you don’t need to buy a separate booster product. One scoop does the lot. Your laundry cupboard (and your wallet) will thank you.

I am loving using the b.clean.co baby detergent. Our nappies come out super fresh and bright. It does a great job on our regular laundry too. Everything smells clean with no overpowering fragrance. So pleased to find an Australian-made, plant-based detergent that performs like a mainstream powder!

I love that there is no intense smell (scent is subtle) to the powder and used the recommended doses for the loads. Everything came out clean, stain free and smelling fresh!

Was really impressed with it as I’ve used a couple of natural detergents and don’t feel like the nappies/clothes are clean. Also love the cornstarch scoop!

I didn’t tell my partner that we were using a different detergent and after the third wash he asked me what I was doing differently because the nappies were noticeably softer but I noticed by the second wash (after they were dry). Loving it!
