Laundry Advice for Winter Wear
Winter wear, from cozy sweaters to heavy coats, requires special care to maintain its look and longevity. As the cold weather approaches, it’s crucial to know how to properly clean and care for these garments to ensure they last for many winters to come.
Washing Outer Wear
Washing puffer jackets & winter coats can feel like a daunting task but these garments do not need to be washed very often. The magic of wearing wool in winter is it neutralises any smells so rarely needs to be washed unless stained or smelly after lots of use. To keep your jackets fresh between washes, make a habit of airing them out after use – we recommend turning them inside out so the interior of your jacket gets aired out too. Hanging your jacket outside to air overnight (under cover) can work wonders and make it feel fresh again without having to wash it.
When you do wash your outerwear, it is important to use a gentle detergent that is made for delicate fabrics (we are working on the best new product for this). Detergents with enzymes should be avoided on wool or delicate fabrics as the enzymes will deteriorate the wool fibres making them loose shape,
strength and colour fastness.
If you’ve got stains on your wool garments or puffers, then the best stain treatment is a bar soap and our Stain Remover Sticks are perfect for this as you can spot treat the stain before washing. Simply wet the stain stick with cold water, and gently rub the stain careful not to felt the wool, then wash in your favourite wool or delicate wash.
How to Wash Down Puffer Jackets
These can be tricky!
Down filling jackets can be tricky to wash and always check your garment care advice first. Like wool fabrics you need a Wool or Delicates Detergent but getting them back to that fluffy feeling after washing can be tricky to get right. Choose a gentle, wool and delicates detergent (enzyme free) and always choose a gentle, low temperature wash cycle.
Drying your can most of the time be done in your tumble dryer on low temperature (check garment care advice)
Hot Tips!
1. Turn them inside out
2. Dry your down items with a max of 2 items in the dryer at a time to ensure the warmth and fluffiness returns.
3. Adding 4-8 Wool Dryer Balls into the load allows warm air to circulate more evenly and remove static while dramatically reducing the overall drying time.
4. Pause the tumble dryer occasionally to shake the jacket to make sure the down spreads evenly throughout the garment.
Fleece Fabrics
Fleece is a classic winter fabric because of it’s insulating abilities so those buttery soft blankets, sweaters, oodies and jackets need a refresh occassionally to keep them fluffy. Keep in mind that there are various kinds of fleece that require different care routines, and always check the care label before washing. Natural fleece is made from wool, but synthetic fleece is more common and is usually made of polyester.
Synthetic materials, in general, cannot handle high levels of heat. Therefore, it is best to wash polyester fleece garments at low temperatures to maintain that soft and fluffy texture. Also, before you wash your fleece garments or blankets, make sure to pre-treat any stains with stain remover sticks as washing without pre-treatment may cause stains to set in permanently. Our SOFT 2 in 1 detergent is the perfect laundry detergent for polyester fleece – it will keep them soft and fluffy and clean!
